Technique

My technique is hybrid, a mix between the traditional mosaic and Trencadis.

As in mosaic made with the direct method, tiles are applied directly on the surface to be decorated. After reproducing the subject on the surface (plates, frames, wooden panels or supports), I lay tiles on the support, using an adhesive and then a stucco for sealing them.

Trencadis, from “trencat” which, in the dialect of the Spanish city of Valencia, means “broken”, leads to create mosaics using waste of broken ceramics. This technique was widely used in nineteenth and twentieth century and was valued as decorative method by Antoni Gaudi. Today, famous architects like Santiago Calatrava use this technique for their works.

Besides glass tiles and smalti, I use mostly ceramic tiles, cracked with special cutters. Every single piece is finished by hand and…also for this reason, each mosaic is a unique piece.
